The Insights Discovery evaluator materializes the work of Carl G. JUNG. In his book "Psychological Types" (1921), Jung identified "rational" functions - "Thinking" and "Feeling" - and "irrational" functions (those not governed by reason) - "Sensation" and "Intuition". In this book, Jung first differentiated types according to their general attitude. He defined attitude as the way a person reacts to experiences from the inside or the outside. He called these two attitudes "Introversion" and "Extraversion". However, Jung was very clear about the fact that there is a third category of individuals, a group of people in whom both preferences are equally balanced, and who use these two attitudes indiscriminately. The elements making up Jung's psychological types, next to the attitudes (Introversion and Extraversion) are the two pairs of functions. There are functions that perceive events - "Sensation" and "Intuition" - and evaluation and decision-making functions - "Thinking" and "Feeling". All four are cognitive functions (in other words, a knowledge process in the broader sense, which includes perception, memory and judgment). "Thinking" and "Feeling" are "rational" functions, or according to Jungian terminology, perceptible functions that are governed by reason. These are the functions we use to make decisions, evaluate and judge. Jung took his ideas on rational functions further by speaking about "head-based" people and "heart-based" people. "Head-based" people prefer to use "Thinking", organizing their lives and making decisions according to an analytical and logical process (true or false). "Heart-based" people prefer to use "Feelings", organizing their lives and making decisions based on personal values (good or bad). Only one function can be used at a given moment, as Jung claimed that they are mutually exclusive.
By taking each of the four functions - Sensation, Intuition, Thinking and Feeling - and combining them with Extraversion and Introversion, Jung identified eight possible personality combinations:
